Gregory W. Hislop
Gregory W. Hislop is a Professor and former Senior Associate Dean in the College of Computing and Informatics (CCI) at Drexel University. CCI is the hub for computing and information activities at Drexel. The College has over 75 full-time faculty members, about 2,200 students, and offers 13 degree programs, undergraduate through Ph.D.
Dr. Hislop’s focus at CCI is primarily in Software Engineering.
Scholarship
Dr. Hislop’s scholarly interests span computing education, applications of information technology in education, and software engineering. Examples include:
- Humanitarian Free and Open Source (HFOSS) – working on the challenge of getting students to participate in HFOSS projects as part of their education via efforts like foss2serve.org
- Curriculum development – serving as a principal contributor in creating or revising graduate or undergraduate degrees in Software Engineering, Information Systems, and Information Technology. Serving as IEEE Computer Society representative for the creation or revision of the curriculum recommendations in Software Engineering (BS and MS) and Information Technology (BS).
- Teaching materials repositories – working on the NSDL Ensemble project to create a digital library of computing education materials and an online community of computing educators, and also being one of the original team that built the SWENET collection of software engineering education materials.
- Project-based courses – pursuing various efforts related to project-based courses in computing curricula, including the HFOSS work above and exploration of ways to create vertically integrated student team experiences.
- Online education - extensive involvement with development and evaluation of online education. Dr. Hislop taught his first fully online course in 1996.
- Software engineering – including interests related to software engineering in practice including software reuse, software process, software evolution, and software product management.
Teaching
Dr. Hislop teaches courses related to software engineering including the CCI Senior Project sequence.

Prior to coming to Drexel, Dr. Hislop spent eighteen years working in government and industry. His efforts encompassed technology planning and evaluation, software development and support, and development and delivery of technical education.
